The Dunkirk Fire Department has roots dating back to 1853 and has proudly been protecting the City and its residents for over 150 years.
The Dunkirk Fire Department is a community based, combination fire department utilizing both career and trained volunteer firefighters. The Fire Department currently consists of 28 career sworn members including the Fire Chief, Captain, five Lieutenants and 21 Firefighters in addition to the volunteer corps. The department serves the City of Dunkirk and its approximately 14,000 residents as well as provides emergency support to the surrounding towns and villages through the mutual aid system.
The Dunkirk Fire Department responds to approximately 2,000 incidents per year. Many of these calls are Emergency Medical Services calls to which the Department is the first responder. The career firefighters of the Department are all certified New York State Firefighters and Certified Emergency Medical Technicians.
The Department operates five full time pieces of firefighting apparatus consisting of 3 engines, 1 ladder, one rescue vehicle which are manned 24 hours a day. Additionally the department has one reserve engine and 3 watercrafts at its disposal for deployment as necessary. This equipment is stationed at 3 fire houses located throughout the city.
